GREEN SCREEN PHOTOBOOTH FOR UC SANTA CRUZ GIVING DAY 2019
Every year, UCSC does a massive, one-day, online fundraiser. Called “Giving Day”, it raises funds for UC Santa Cruz students, faculty, and campus programs.
For 2019, we helped out by providing a green screen photobooth. All the images were branded to support the event. And guests were able to immediately post the images on social media, to further the fundraising efforts even more!

OUR ROAMING PHOTOBOOTH INCREASES FAN ENGAGEMENT
We partnered with Tepui Tents - an outdoor lifestyle company based in Santa Cruz, CA - to roam the California Roots Festival on their behalf. We used our Roaming Photobooth to provide what we lovingly call "digital souvenirs" for the concert-goers. They got a cool boomerang or still photo to share on social meda, text, and email; Tepui Tents got some great social media exposure.
We work with the best graphic designers to create custom branded artwork for each event. As technology evolves, and we can do more and more cool things on our own phones, we strive to create an experience that folks can't do on their phones. The better we are at that, the more likely the image will get shared on social media. And that's what our corporate clients like about us.
BOOMERANGS AND BEER!
This is what it looks like when your favorite neighborhood brewery asks you to help them celebrate their 30th anniversary AND it's the last day of Beer Week!
We set up our Boomerang Booth at Seabright Brewery to help them engage with their customers during the celebration. We created custom, animated artwork for the boomerangs. Guests were able to text and email the boomerangs immediately, and then post on social media.
The guests get a cool experience (one they can't create on their phones!), and our client got great social media exposure.
RACHEL AND MARK TIE THE KNOT WITH THE FISHES
Perched on the rocky cliffs on the far west side of Santa Cruz, CA, there's a research and education facility called Long Marine Lab. The lab serves as the field base for researchers doing very important oceanographic research. Stuff like marine mammal physiology and ecology. And marine invertebrate ecology. And ocean toxicology research. And adjacent to the lab is the one of our favorite wedding venues!
It's called Seymour Marine Discovery Center. It's an exhibit hall with everything from shark "touch tanks", to huge aquariums with rockfish, eels, decorator crabs, and jellyfish.
After Rachel and Mark said their vows (on the huge outdoor deck overlooking the beautiful Monterey Bay!), the party moved inside. Rachel and Mark's friends and family floated through the exhibit hall, enjoying the huge saltwater tanks teeming with ocean wildlife.
And we tucked our Infinite photobooth into one corner of the exhibit hall to help document the evening.
Guests were treated to a custom 4x6 print with ocean themed artwork. We're huge fans of larger prints, like 4x6 and 5x7!
WHY DON'T WE LIST PRICES ON OUR WEBSITE?
This is a very touchy subject in the photobooth industry, and nobody we've ever met is in the grey area on it.
Whether we're talking with fellow photoboothers or potential clients, everyone has a firm opinion on why pricing should, or shouldn't be, listed on a photobooth website.
Here's why we don't list pricing on our website. And the good news for clients is that it ultimately benefits them!
REASON #1: We don't want to scare off potential clients!
We don't want to scare of potential clients who see a high priced package, and may not completely understand why it's so high-priced, and just write us off thinking we're too expensive.
For example, let's pretend that a potential client is looking at our website, planning a relatively small house party. A simple photobooth experience with prints and no social media sharing may meet their needs perfectly. But if they see pricing for a big corporate event - like green screen animated GIFs with three social media sharing stations and an external monitor to run a separate slideshow - they could easily (and incorrectly) think that Rebel Photobooth is too expensive for their intimate house party.
REASON #2: It's Economics 101, baby!
Ready for a (not so) secret? Did you know that hotels and venues charge higher prices for their spaces on Saturday nights? And the second most for Friday nights? And the third most for Sunday? It's basic supply and demand - higher demand on the weekends means higher prices on the weekends.
We guarantee that if you book their space on a Tuesday at noon, when demand for the space is lower, you're going to pay less than you would on the weekend.
We like having the same flexibility! We're happiest when we're boothing every day of the week, not just on weekend nights. And by NOT listing pricing on our website, we give ourselves the flexibility to give clients a lower price for those days that we're not typically busy.
A 60TH BIRTHDAY HOUSE PARTY FOR ADAM
We were lucky enough to be asked to help celebrate Adam's 60th birthday party at an intimate house party near La Selva Beach, CA. We set up in one of the spare rooms and guests easily moved from the outside deck overlooking the agricultural fields of Watsonville, into the "photobooth room", and back again.
One of the benefits of our open-air photobooth is that it's scalable - like for this event, we can set up in a space as small as six feet wide by 5 feet deep! We like this setup because it tends to create more intimate images, since the guests fill the frame more than they would in a setup with more space.

We worked with De Arlin, the proprietor of Boutique La Lune in Los Gatos, to bring our confetti-boomerang booth to her grand opening party.
Guests mingled, sipped champagne, shopped, and enjoyed blowing hand-made confetti all over the place!
All of the images were shared instantly via text and email, and posted on social media to help promote her grand opening.
We did an event this weekend that, more so than any other recent event, has helped us define ourselves in the market, while also reinforcing our name, Rebel Photobooth.
We love it when we have events and clients that allow us to showcase what we can do to delivery a truly revolutionary photo experience to their event. And this was definitely one of those events!
The event was a high school prom, with about 300 guests who took over the second floor of the beautiful Chaminade Resort and Spa in Santa Cruz, CA.
Our goal was to deliver to the guests an image that they wouldn't expect to see coming from a "photobooth". Here's how we did it.
The client knew they wanted big prints, in a vertical format to capture all the pretty gowns. We collaborated a bit more and decided to do a single image on a 5x7 print. Now, that right there is already above and beyond a "typical" photobooth experience. Usually, when I say "photobooth" you think two things: "photostrip" and "tiny pictures", right?
So to walk away with a frame-worthy 5x7 (printed on a professional dye-sub printer in under 20 seconds, by the way!) is already blowing minds.
But we didn't stop there! Oh, no! I mean, this is P-R-O-M, right?!
We took it to the next level with the lighting. Instead of a glittery or sequined or rosette backdrop, we went with...
...drum roll please.....
Now, right about now all of the photographers out there should know exactly the look we were going for. Formal event + guests all dressed up + white backdrop = high-key images!
All "high-key" means is a super bright white background with no shadows on your subject. And even if you don't know the term, you definitely know the look. It's the same technique that high fashion photographers use for the covers of glamour magazines.
And that high-key, glamour look is exactly what we delivered. And it can't be pulled off in a "typical photobooth" or by someone who doesn't have photography and lighting experience.
Behind our 8' x 8' white backdrop we put a Paul C. Buff Alien Bee 800 on a lightstand. That light was set to be the optical slave, which means that when the two flashes in our photobooth fired, this light would "see" that flash and then fire, as well. The effect - if you set everything up correctly - is a completely blown-out (i.e. white background) that puts all the emphasis on your subject.
And isn't that what making pictures is all about?!
During all of our events, my greatest joy is pulling the pictures from the printer, handing them to guests, and watching their reactions. And while every event is different, the basic human behavior when you put pictures in guests' hands is *always the same*. They huddle together, prints in hand, pointing, laughing, smiling, and showing other people.
Best job in the world? I have it.

Salesian School is a private kindergarten through eighth-grade school in Watsonville, CA.
For the last two years, Rebel Photobooth has donated a photobooth for their annual fundraiser.
We do a couple of donation events every year for non-profits that we believe in, and it feels really good to support Salesian School.
For this event, we did a simple 4x6 single image session with custom artwork on each image, as well as standard GIFs.

Seascape Beach Resort in Aptos, California (just a few miles from our home base in Santa Cruz), is one of the best locations on the Monterey Bay for social and corporate events. It's located right on the beach and has stunning views of Monterey Bay from every room.
One of Seascape's event coordinators contacted me about providing a photobooth experience for a corporate client who was having their annual employee appreciation party at Seascape.
After some consulting with the client, we decided that the best solution for them was a green screen photobooth. They provided some great graphics and we integrated them into our software to provide a completely custom, one-of-a-kind backdrop for their images.
We love doing green screen activations for clients for one simple reason: the output is AMAZING! We can create, literally, any kind of background that the client wants.
For example, have a look at the first picture below.
Now, ignore the fact that the guy wasn't ready for the picture to be taken, and just look at the background.
That is a 100% custom-made background for this client.
The only way to pull off something like this is with green screen technology. And we can do that for our clients.
There's another technical aspect of green screen activations that makes them tricky to pull off well. And that is the lighting. You need large light sources that eliminate shadows, and you need to know where to place the guests in relation to the background and the lights in order to make good pictures.
The one thing I did learn from this event is to ask more questions about the event. If it seems like guests will be wearing a lot of black, then I'd recommend that we do a lighter background. Since this was a pretty formal event, a lot of guests were wearing black, and they blended in with the black background.

A couple of my friends are involved with BNI - Business Network International.
It's a nationwide group of professionals who regularly meet to discuss business, support each other, and offer referrals for business.
I've been considering joining the group, and the only thing holding me back is the timing of the weekly meetings. But, I was happy to say "Heck, yeah!" when they asked if I wanted to show off our photobooth at a mixer they were hosting. We rarely do free events, but this one seemed like a great opportunity to drum up some new business leads. Plus, it was local, on a Monday evening when we weren't booked, and we had nothing else to do :)
I ended up meeting a lot of folks from many different areas of business. It was interesting to talk to them and brainstorm on-the-fly with them about how we could use a photobooth to promote their business.
We spent Tax Day 2017 celebrating NOT tax day, but a couple of birthdays.
The venue was a beautiful home in the Santa Cruz mountains. Down a rutted out, half-paved road, past the iconic tourist trap known as Mystery Spot (which I can't wait to take my almost-seven-year old daughter to soon!), through a gate, and up a windy road.
Good people celebrating a father and son birthday with friends and neighbors, with a bunch of little cousins running around the place.
We had a couple of guests tell us "Your photobooth is on point!" and that it really helped make the event special. The elder guest of honor, who was initially against the whole idea of having a photobooth at the party, was one the most repeat customers!
